The latest buzz on the cricket circuit is the four-day tests. Several current and former cricketers have expressed their views on the idea. The Indian skipper Virat Kohli is the latest to share his opinion.
ICC has announced that they plan to conduct test matches for 4 days rather than playing it for 5 days in the 2023-2031 FTP cycle so that they have more free days to conduct highly remunerative limited-overs tournaments.
This is still in the stage of the proposal, Cricket Australia had advocated the idea and gave nod for trying it out. The veterans of the game including Vernon Philander, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Lyon have strongly opposed 4-day test matches, while the likes Joe Root and Michael Vaughan have said that this can be tried out as part of the evolution.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli, in a recent press meet, strongly opposed the 4-day test format. Kohli said that he is not in favour of any alterations which hurts the sanctity of the traditional five-day format.
It should not be altered. As I said, the day-night is another step towards commercializing test cricket and you know, creating excitement around it, but it can’t be tinkered with too much. I don’t believe so
India recently played their 1st ever day-night Tests against Bangladesh in the Eden Gardens and since then there was anticipation regarding India’s acceptance to day-night tests on overseas tours.
“You know the Day-Night test is the most that should be changed about Test cricket, according to me”, Virat Kohli said on the eve of the 1st T20 against Sri Lanka
India will be taking on Sri Lanka in the 1st of three-match T20I series in Guwahati on Sunday.
