Root and Morgan further substantiated the touring team’s position. Morgan fell on 92 and England faced a mini-collapse to end up at 278/9 in full 50 overs. Lasith Malinga was the star with the ball as he picked up a five-wicket haul.

In reply, the home team fell apart against the pace and bounce of the English bowlers, especially Olly Stone. At 31/4, Sri Lanka was almost out of the race unless rain could force the pause in the match. D De Silva and Thisara Perera scored a few runs but the D/L par score was far away. Chris Woakes ended with three wickets in 31 run victory.
