Shubman Gill refused to walk to the pavilion after being given out by the umpire in the fourth round of the Ranji Trophy tournament at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali against Delhi.
Punjab after enduring a disappointing Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournaments have started their Ranji Trophy campaign with two outright wins and a draw to lead the points table. Mumbai, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and defending champions Vidarbha ate among others in the group.
The fourth round of Ranji Trophy began today with various teams playing across India. Punjab and Delhi locked horns today in IS Bindra Stadium.
After winning the toss, Punjab opted to bat first. When Shubman Gill was caught behind and the umpire Mohamad Rafi ruled him out, Shubman Gill refused to head back and stood there. There are reports that Shubman Gill had abused the umpire and in a sudden turn of events, the umpire had overturned his decision. This, in turn, made the Delhi players angry who walked out from the ground and the play was halted for a few minutes.
The times of India journalist gave the coverage of the incident from the ground.
Gill, after the decision was overturned, did not make use of the opportunity as he got out caught behind for 23.
“The straight umpire (Mohammed Rafi) had adjudged Shubman caught behind and the batsman then walked up to the umpire and was seen having an argument asking him to reverse his decision. The straight umpire then consulted the square-leg umpire (Paschim Pathak) and reversed his decision,” Delhi team manager Vivek Khurana told PTI.
